About Slow Genius
Slow Genius — Putting the past back in its own time.
Slow Genius is an independent long-form digital publication and the English written companion to the documentary history and institutional analysis channel 慢慢也熊飞 (@slow_genius). While our video episodes are narrated in Mandarin Chinese, each essay on this site is a stand-alone, thoroughly researched English edition designed for readers who prefer text, want to examine the underlying primary records, and wish to trace every factual claim to its original source.
What We Write About
Our essays focus on four interconnected areas of inquiry:
- History: Historical turning points that still shape modern institutions — from a 1661 scholar protest in Suzhou and a 1965 student armband in Des Moines, to the Roman Senate's debate over the Catilinarian conspirators in 63 BC, the rise and fall of the Ryukyu Kingdom, and the institutional mechanics of the Great Depression and the New Deal.
- Law & Institutions: How American legal, regulatory, and public systems operate on the ground — including federal emergency-room mandates (EMTALA), nursing home real-estate structures, highway trust funds, restrictive property covenants, constitutional compromises, and public nutrition assistance (SNAP).
- AI & Economy: Empirical analysis of capital expenditure, power-grid bottlenecks, semiconductor supply chains, federal procurement data, and corporate financial filings — especially when two analysts can look at the exact same balance sheet and reach opposite conclusions.
- Culture & Psychology: The evolution of internet communities from early dial-up bulletin boards to algorithmic feeds, alongside essays on cognitive psychology, persuasion, and human-animal bonds.
Our Research & Verification Methodology
Most essays begin with a single document — a court opinion, an inspection report, a corporate 10-K filing, or a historical chronicle — and ask what the conventional summary leaves out. Before an essay is published, factual statements about historical figures, legal disputes, and economic metrics are cross-checked against primary documents wherever accessible:
- Published judicial opinions, statutory texts, and regulatory inspection reports;
- SEC EDGAR filings, Federal Reserve releases, and federal procurement databases;
- Archival manuscripts, period newspapers, and peer-reviewed historical scholarship.
When an account rests on a single historical witness — such as a memoir, an anonymous local chronicle, or a recollection recorded decades later — our text explicitly notes the provenance ("according to..."). Whenever possible, we quote primary documents in their original wording rather than paraphrasing them for dramatic effect.

Accuracy matters to us. If you spot a factual error, a citation discrepancy, or a broken archival link, please let us know via our Contact page. Confirmed factual errors are corrected directly in the text and documented in a transparent correction note at the bottom of the essay.
